James Michael Poteat

April 27, 1947 — October 5, 2023

Ardmore, OK

James Michael Poteat known to some as “Rusty”, was born on April 27, 1947 to James Thomas and the late Martha Ann (McGee) Poteat in Ardmore Oklahoma.  The eldest of four children.

     Michael attended Central School in Milo, OK until intergration when he then attended and graduated from Springer High School, Springer OK. Michael attended OakmulgeeTechnical School, Oakmulgee OK before being drafted into the Arm Services “Army Branch”.  He served a tour of duty in the Korean War and received a “Honorable Discharge”. He later attended and graduated from Southeastern State University, Durant OK.  Michael worked for Uniroyal Tire Company until moving to Texas and working for Weber Aircraft.  He later returned to Ardmore and worked as a Ranch Hand for Keith R. Gray - Bar Ranch, until his health no longer permitted him to do so.

Michael loved reading western books, fishing and watching old western movies.  He was a superb cook and had a laugh that was joyful and displayed a whole lot of happiness.

     Michael united with the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church at an early age professing his faith in Jesus Christ.  On October 5, 2023 at 7:15 p.m. His soul took flight from a long battle with cancer while surrounded by the “love” of family at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Ardmore, Oklahoma.

     James Michael is proceeded in death by His mother, Martha Ann (McGee) Poteat.  He leaves to forever cherish precious memories his daughters, Joy Michelle Poteat and April (Cedric) Petites of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Five grand-children;  Michael Roberson, Cedric Jr,  Petties, Darius Petties, Elijah Petties and Faith Petties.  His father James Thomas Poteat, Springer OK; Almetta Brown, Darnell (Cassandra) Poteat, and Geraldine Poteat-Williams of Ardmore, OK; An Aunt Erma Jean (Alphonzo) White, Calera, OK.  Numerous of nephew, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
