Vera Wright

Vera Pickens Wright slept away peacefully from this life on Saturday morning, December 2, 2023, at 6:00 a.m. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life.  Vera and her twin sister, Villian, were born in Newport Community on February 2, 1930, to A.C. and Lou (Shannon) Pickens. With the other siblings, they attended Roosevelt Elementary School and Tatum High School.

Vera married Raymond Wright in 1948, and he preceded her death on December 6, 2004. In this union, four children were born: Elnora, Raymond Jr., Marcella, and Carol.

When she was young, Vera united with and was baptized at Jehovah Baptist Church. During her younger years, she was a member of Jehovah’s Choir. She was a most faithful worshipper until her health failed. Vera was a very hard worker and was employed by Kathleen Woods and Dr. Imogene Mathis of Healdton, OK. Vera later became employed at Memorial Hospital in Ardmore in the housekeeping department, where she worked until she retired.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her siblings: her twin sister, Villian Brown, Jenny Mae Coulter, Mary McCullough, Fellon “Red” Pickens, Carl “Tom” Pickens, Delbert Pickens, Leaford “Sonny Boy” Pickens, and Leslie Pickens.

She leaves to forever cherish precious memories—her children: Elnora Anderson, Raymond Wright Jr., Marcella (Harold) Roberts, and Carol Ann Biggers; seven grandsons: Wendall (Anna) Wright, Anthony Herbert, Lamar (Pam) Anderson, Kenny Herbert, Brian (Jennifer) Roberts, Sean (Brandi) Roberts, and Degrick (Tiffany) Herbert; 23 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, countless other relatives and friends, members of the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church family, and Lakeland Manor residents and staff, including her special picks: Tammy, Michelle, and Alvis.
