Vernon Ezell Calhoun, a cherished figure in the Ardmore community, peacefully departed this world on January 30, 2026, in Lawton, Oklahoma, at the venerable age of 90. Born on April 22, 1935, in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, Vernon’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of dedication, kindness, and an unyielding love for family and friends.
For over two decades, Mr. Calhoun lent his heart and hands to the City of Ardmore, where he worked tirelessly in the Sanitation and Construction departments until his well-deserved retirement in 1996. His steadfast commitment to his profession was matched only by his devotion to his community, where he became known for his gentle spirit that made everyone feel welcome and valued in his presence.
Mr. Calhoun’s educational journey took him from Wynnewood to Lubbock, Texas, and ultimately to Gainesville, Texas, where he completed his formative years. Throughout his life, his unwavering support for his family shone brightly. Although he had no children of his own, he embraced the roles of mentor and confidant to his beloved nieces and nephews, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts and lives.
On a beautiful day, August 18, 1975, Vernon married the love of his life, Ella Mae Stoughtenborough, in Gainesville, Texas. Their union brought joy into his life until her passing, after which he found companionship once more with Connie Calhoun, who preceded him in death in 2020. Vernon also endured the loss of his father, David Earnest Calhoun, his mother, Melissa "Reece" Calhoun, and his brother, Bro. Ernest Lee Calhoun.
His legacy lives on through his loving family, including nieces Malissa Reece Smith, Lena Reece, Yolander Newkirk, Esther Mae Johnson, Linda Kay Wilson, Alice Jackson, Sarah Pleasant, and Minnie Ola, as well as special sister Cimmie Cotton and nephews Warren Ward, Billy Ray Jefferson, Earnest Cane, Robert Johnson, Rodney Johnson, and a host of other cherished cousins and friends.
A proud member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ardmore, Mr. Calhoun carried his faith as a beacon of hope. Even as health challenges arose, which limited his ability to attend services, his spirit shone brightly within the community he adored. After moving to Lawton to live with his niece, he became a beloved member of the Northwest Baptist Church of Lawton.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate the remarkable life of Vernon Ezell Calhoun during visitation on February 11, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service on February 12, 2026, at 1:00 PM.
